What is Low-Level Light Therapy?
Updated: Apr 20
Originally researched and developed by NASA, low-level light therapy is the application of light energy to the body to obtain therapeutic benefits. It produces a natural photobiochemical reaction similar to the process of plant photosynthesis.
Low level light therapy, also known as photobiomodulation or biophotonics has a wide range of applications including the treatment of aging skin, acne, muscle and joint pain.
How exactly does light therapy ease pain and improve aging skin?
Certain wavelengths of light energy deeply penetrate into the dermal and subcutaneous layers of skin. In these deep layers, light energy works by activating color sensitive chemicals within cells.
The mitochondria provides all the energy needed for cells to carry out normal functions. The mitochondria is directly affected, and stimulated by red light and near infrared light energy.
When our cells are brimming with energy, beautiful things start to happen.
Circulation improves and capillaries and vessels begin to repair. Damaging free radicals are scavenged and neutralized. Cells begin to regenerate, proliferate, and migrate as they are intended. New DNA is synthesized and growth factors are produced. Collagen and elastin production are increased. Studies by NASA report that DNA synthesis in fibroblasts and muscle cells quadrupled when exposed to low level laser therapy.
In just three sessions per week for four weeks, beautiful results can be seen and maintained. This 'after' photo was taken three months after her last light therapy session. No other products were used and no other procedures were performed.
Our Celluma LED panels have three different settings. Red light treats aging skin. Blue light therapy kills acne causing bacteria to clear skin and prevent future breakouts. Our panels are also a safe, effective and natural way to reduce pain and inflammation. The pain setting uses red light and near infrared to significantly reduce swelling, arthritic and joint pain, muscle spasms and stiffness.
Low level light therapy, photobiomodulation or biophotonics is a natural, safe and highly effective treatment option for aging skin, acne and pain.
